Math Support at EmpowerEd

Math Support That Starts Where Your Child Actually Is

When a child struggles with math, more grade-level worksheets are rarely the answer. We find the gaps, build the foundation, and grow real understanding and confidence.

Looking Beyond the Grade Level

Individualized, structured, and built for understanding

At EmpowerEd, we look beyond the grade level to determine which foundational math skills are secure, where gaps may exist, and what your child is ready to learn next.

Our math support is individualized, structured, and designed to help students build both understanding and confidence.

Assess → Identify the Gap → Teach → Practice → Progress Monitor → Advance
How It Works

Our Math Learning Pathway

1

Assess & Identify

We begin by looking at your child’s current math skills and identifying areas of strength and need. Depending on the student, we may assess skills such as:

Number recognition Counting & one-to-one correspondence Quantity & comparing numbers Number sense Addition & subtraction Place value & base-ten Math fact fluency Computation Problem solving & reasoning

We may also use Acadience Math benchmark and progress-monitoring measures to help identify foundational skill gaps and track growth over time.

2

Build the Foundation

If foundational skills are not yet secure, instruction begins there.

A student working in third or fourth grade may still need explicit instruction in number sense, quantity, place value, or early computation before higher-level concepts will truly make sense. We meet students at their instructional level rather than simply assigning work based on their grade.

Instruction may include:

Hands-on manipulatives Visual models Number lines Ten frames Base-ten blocks Structured math games Explicit teacher modeling Guided practice Repeated practice for mastery
For many neurodivergent learners, making math visual, concrete, predictable, and interactive can make an enormous difference.
3

Develop Conceptual Understanding

Our goal is not just for students to memorize a procedure. We want them to understand why the math works.

Students build connections between each stage before being expected to complete increasingly abstract work independently:

Concrete materials → Pictures & models → Numbers → Math symbols

When appropriate, EmpowerEd incorporates structured resources such as Math Mammoth alongside individualized instruction, manipulatives, games, and targeted skill practice.

4

Monitor Progress

Math instruction should change when the data tells us it needs to change.

We use ongoing observation, instructional data, student work, and tools such as Acadience Math progress monitoring to track student growth. This helps us answer important questions:

  • Is the skill improving?
  • Is the student ready for the next skill?
  • Does instruction need to change?
Students move forward based on demonstrated growth and readiness—not simply because a workbook chapter is finished.

What Does the Math Pathway Look Like?

1
Number recognition
2
Counting & one-to-one correspondence
3
Quantity & number sense
4
Comparing numbers
5
Addition & subtraction concepts
6
Place value & base-ten understanding
7
Fact fluency & computation
8
Multi-step math & problem solving

Students may enter the pathway at any point based on their individual needs.

Is This a Good Fit?

Who Can Benefit?

Performing below grade level in math
Difficulty with number sense
Struggle to remember previously taught math concepts
Need more hands-on or visual instruction
Understand procedures but not the concepts behind them
Difficulty with math facts or computation
Need additional support with problem solving
Have ADHD, autism, dyslexia, learning disabilities, or other learning differences
Become frustrated, anxious, or avoidant when completing math
Need instruction at a different pace than their classroom provides
Why EmpowerEd?

More Than Math Tutoring

At EmpowerEd, we are not simply helping students finish tonight’s homework. We are working to determine why math is difficult, strengthen the skills underneath that difficulty, and build a pathway toward greater independence.

Our goal is for students to leave EmpowerEd not only as stronger mathematicians, but also thinking:

“I understand this.”
“I can figure this out.”
“I’m good at math!”
